Import Export Code Registration

This is a ten digit number that is required by any person(s) or entities looking to import goods into or export them out of India. This code is unique to a business or person and is valid for a life time. The Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and the Government of India are responsible for issuing and cancelling IECs.

Why Is It Important?

Any import or export transaction will not be accepted if any of the parties involved do not have an IEC. Financial institutions such as banks require the IEC of importing or exporting party in order to approve payment to and from other countries. This code allows you to expand your business on an international scale. It also allows you the benefit of gaining profits from importing or exporting goods courtesy of the customs and export promotion council as well as the DGFT.

Who Needs It?

Any person(s) or business entity wishing to import or export goods into India is required to have this code. There are, however, some exceptions to the rule. Any imports or exports of personal goods that are not for business purposes or any such transactions by government entities and a few notable charities are exempted from having an IEC code.

How Do I Apply For An IEC Code?

Application for the IEC code can be achieved by filling the Aayaat Niryaat form 2A either manually (and dropping it off at the DGFT offices in your region) or by making an online application. All relevant documents must be presented during the application process and all relevant fees paid for the application to be considered. In the case of any corrections, the DGFT will send back the application through the address provided in the application allowing you a 15-day window to make the necessary corrections and send back your application.
